Team LFPME take part in first Bethlehem Marathon
Updated:26 April 2013

On Sunday 21st April Team LFPME (Komal, Pauline, Helena and Del) participated in the first ever Bethlehem Marathon.

Del completed the half marathon and Komal, Pauline and Helena completed the 10k run in wet and windy weather.  The marathon route took the runners (over 650) around Bethlehem and through the Aida Refugee camp, and along the Separation Wall.

Before the runs the Mayor of Bethlehem welcomed all the runners to Bethlehem and a minutes silence was held for the victims of the attacks on the Boston Marathon.

The Right to Movement marathon helped put Palestine on the international sporting map and enable hundreds of internationals to run with Palestinians in sporting solidarity.  Due to Israel’s settlements, wall and restrictions on the city, the full marathon route had to loop twice around the city.

The Team has managed to raise £5000 so far which will go towards the UNRWA summer fun weeks for children and towards helping LFPME raise more awareness about the situation in Palestine in the UK.  The Team was supported by Thompsons Solicitors and Unite the Union.

The marathon was also covered in the Guardian and LFPME's Komal was quoted in the article.
